While the General Assembly provides a forum for worship, fellowship, and unity of Spirit, its chief purpose is business, both doctrinal and practical. From the beginning it has been the expressly stated purpose of the Assembly to search the Scriptures for additional light and knowledge; to resolve interpretations which tend to be divisive. The ideal in view is to strive “…for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ”(Ephesians 4:12, 13).
